The Truth Comes Out ;)

Welcome, college friends!
As this is my first blog, ever, I knew I wanted to discuss something that has become a lifestyle of mine in the past year, nutrition and fitness. This is my second year of college. I did my first year at Western Illinois University where I studied Agriculture Business. Before that, I went to Navy boot camp and Aircrew training for a total of 9 months in 2011. It was't until February 2013 that I discovered the secret to losing weight and building muscle. Now, I am studying my passion here at NSU, majoring in Food Science and Nutrition/Exercise Science.

Many of you here are college freshman, living on your own for the first  time and making your daily food decisions by yourself. Many times this leads to the dreaded "Freshman 15". Yes, our lives get busy in school, but I'm here to tell you from experience, that you can take control of your actions and not make yourself victim to the weight gain. I have no choice but to be blunt and lay out the hard truth about getting and staying healthy and fit.

1. There are no short cuts!
2. There is no magic pill.
3. There is no magic fad diet. (Dieting is temporary anyways, but nutrition is a lifestyle.)

There are 5 basic keys to successful weight loss.
1. It is going to take hard work and discipline. A positive attitude.
2. Proper hydration. Water, water, water..lot of water! I drink about 1 gallon every day.
3. Adequate sleep. Getting 7-8 hours of uninterrupted sleep a night can do wonders!
4. Nutrition! A healthy diet is 80% of weight loss. Not matter how hard you work out, you can not beat a bad diet.
5. Consistency. Never give up!

While no one is perfect, the closer you follow these basic steps, the sooner you will have success.
If anyone would like further information on nutrition basics or workouts, please let me know! I would love to be a part of your fitness journey :)

  1. Great post! I remember when I first started college. I ate like crap and never worked out, but I walked everywhere and managed to keep the freshman 15 off. But, that's just the tip of the iceberg. It's SO important to eat clean and healthy. I like how you stress that there are NO SHORTCUTS! We always hear about these fads and plans to "lose weight fast" blah blah blah. That's all a scam! And it's really not that complicated- eat clean and train mean. Period. ;)

  3. I have recently been trying to change my diet and get in shape. Do you have any exercise tips or foods you like to eat that could be helpful to me?

  4. As a beginner, I strongly recommend Jamie Eason's 12 week Live Fit trainer. Last year I tried it out with my sister and we loved it! It's perfect for beginners since it tells you what to eat (includes many food options so you don't get bored), it gives you a workout for everyday (there are rest days!), and it even has videos of all of the exercises so you can learn how to do them. There is even more important information listed on the website, but let me just say, if you follow to a "T" you will definitely see results :) Did I mention that it is FREE? 5. This is inspiring I have a friend that had a scare at 23yrs and now 25yrs she went from 206wt. to 145wt in one years time. Now she encourages others to take control of their own lives and creates updates on here fitness goals to show how real it all is.

  6. Thank you! I know sometimes we think that losing weight can see impossible, but so many people have had great success by being consistent and not giving up. Some people have even lost weight, gained it all back, then lost it again! I believe that this is proof that if you want something bad enough, you will succeed.
